About

Bandflower is an online/print magazine founded by two sisters as a passion project to showcase their love for the music and art they like and transform it into something of their own. Growing up in the aughts and 2010s, they found their creative inspirations watching colorful cartoons, music videos of their favorite bands, and Youtube videos of some of the funniest and most creative people they’ve seen. Still, being from a majority white town and engaging in subcultures with a majority white crowd has left them craving more POC within their interests and area.

Dissatisfied with the boring, sloppy, or even discontinued state of the things they love, they decided to make a space on their own terms with equal parts learned knowledge and learning in the process. Bandflower is made on their own terms and aims to be authentically themselves and embrace creativity from people who feel underrepresented even as the scene continues to grow.

As a result, Bandflower aims to be:

  1. WOC led and proud
    • Many indie publications tout themselves for their diverse teams, often women-led and/or LGBTQ (and this is definitely something to be proud of!), but we can't help but notice the gap in contributors of color and their white counterparts. We aim to be a team of people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and locations, with an emphasis on spotlighting equally diverse artists and events.
  2. Genre agnostic
    • Though we are an alternative* magazine, we like to explore genres outside the usual indie and pop most publications cover. We like anything that makes noise.
  3. Multi media formatted
    • Not only do we aim to have our articles and photo galleries, we hope to adapt some of our larger pieces into video essays to expand our audience across platforms and offer a different take of what's been said. Not to mention, we hope on having video interviews with great artists up.
  4. Powered by real people and opinions
    • You ever read something and go "That kinda felt like a really bland ad written by AI"? We hate that too. We like embracing opinions and personal ratings without being callous. People feel a lot about music and we want to show why we feel the way we do.
